About VATMeter

VATMeter answers a small number of Irish questions the State publishes the rules for and does not compute for you. This page says where the figures come from, what has and has not been checked, and who to contact when something here is wrong.

What this site is

A reference for a small number of Irish figures that the State publishes the rules for and does not work out for you: what VAT rate applies to what and how to calculate it, when the public holidays fall and what you are entitled to on them, and what a private car costs to tax.

Each of those is a lookup or a piece of arithmetic that is genuinely simple once you have the right number in front of you. The difficulty is never the sum — it is finding the figure, knowing which version of it applies to your date, and being able to check it. So this site attaches the source to every figure and shows the working on every calculation.

What it is not

It is not the Revenue Commissioners, not the Department of Transport, and not a government service. It has no affiliation with any of them and no access to your records. Nothing on it is tax advice or legal advice, and it cannot tell you what rate applies to your particular product or what your particular car is taxed at.

It also carries no advertising. There are no ad slots, no ad network, and no ads.txt — not as a promise, but as a fact about the build.

Who runs it

VATMeter is built and maintained by Desymphony. It is one of a small portfolio of single-purpose reference sites, each one covering one country and one subject, each built on the same discipline: every shipped number is read from a primary source and carries that source with it, and a figure that cannot be sourced is stated as a gap rather than estimated.

The standard it holds itself to

Three things, and they are checkable rather than aspirational.

  1. No unsourced number. The build fails on a figure with no citation, no effective period, or a date that has passed. It also fails if a number that looks like a rate is typed into a page instead of read from the data.
  2. No claim of verification. The word “verified” does not appear on this site. The figures are read from primary sources and cited; nobody has signed for them, and saying otherwise would be a stronger claim than the truth supports.
  3. Gaps are stated. Where this site will not give you a number, it says so in a panel on the page, explains why, and tells you where the answer actually lives. The methodology page lists all of them.

Corrections

If a figure here disagrees with the source it cites, the source is right. Corrections with a citation attached are the most useful thing anyone can send — here is how.

Every source this site rests on is listed on the sources page, generated from the same data the calculators use, so it cannot fall out of step with them.

Where it is

vatmeter.com. The site is a static export — no accounts, no logins, no database, and nothing you type into a calculator leaves your browser. The privacy page says what that means in practice.
